The Ministry of Education released two strategic documents under the Bharat Innovates initiative, mapping out India's higher-education-rooted innovation and startup landscape just two days before the programme's flagship event opens in Nice, France.
The first document, the Bharat Innovates Startup Compendium, profiles 120 high-potential startups drawn from a national pool of more than 1,200 nominated ventures. The second highlights nearly 50 research and innovation projects from institutions, including the IITs, IISc and other premier centres. Together, the documents offer sector-wise market intelligence, technology trends and engagement pathways aimed at helping Indian ventures tap global growth opportunities.
The release underscores a core objective of the National Education Policy 2020 — moving India from a knowledge-consuming nation to one that creates knowledge, innovation and technology. Officials noted that the featured startups have emerged from the country's leading institutions, incubators and research ecosystems, reflecting the rising innovation capacity within India's higher education sector.
The initiative has been framed as part of an innovation-led Viksit Bharat vision and is already drawing strong investor interest. Bharat Innovates is reportedly opening doors to global investment firms managing over $3 trillion in assets across more than 12,000 investments worldwide, with the showcase expected to draw over 100 global investors and institutions. Nearly $20 million in investment commitments are said to be near closure, following roadshows in Paris, Tokyo and Bengaluru.
Senior officials present at the release, including the Principal Scientific Adviser, the Higher Education Secretary and the Atal Innovation Mission Director, emphasised the ministry's role in strengthening the pipeline of research-led startups and building a deeper culture of deep-tech innovation in India.
The documents arrive ahead of Bharat Innovates 2026, the maiden edition of the programme being hosted in Nice from June 14 to 16 under the India–France Year of Innovation — an initiative announced earlier in 2026 and jointly inaugurated by leaders of both countries. The event brings 120 deep-tech ventures, selected from over 3,000 applicants through a multi-stage national process culminating in a pre-summit at IIT Bombay, alongside 15 leading higher education institutions, including IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay and IIT Madras.
Collectively, the cohort holds more than 1,500 patents and has raised over $1.5 billion, including two listed firms — ideaForge and Ather Energy. Officials also pointed to 28 innovation-focused MoUs lined up for signing with French and other international partners, part of a broader "Incubator Innovation Bridge" and "Industry Innovation Bridge" framework designed to connect Indian innovators with global institutions and corporates on a structured, ongoing basis.
