Chennai Super Kings (CSK) completed a fairytale return to the Indian Premier League yesterday, crushing Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 8 wickets at the Wankhede Stadium to lift their third IPL trophy. In a high-stakes final, veteran Australian opener Shane Watson played an innings for the ages, smashing an unbeaten 117 off just 57 balls to make a challenging chase look like a walk in the park.Watson’s Masterclass Chasing 179 for victory, CSK had a nervous start, with Watson failing to score off his first 10 deliveries. However, once he found his rhythm, there was no stopping the onslaught. Watson hammered 11 fours and 8 sixes, bringing up his second century of the season. He shared a decisive 117-run partnership with Suresh Raina (32), effectively batting Hyderabad out of the game. Ambati Rayudu hit the winning boundary with nine balls to spare, sparking wild celebrations in the yellow camp.
SRH’s Valiant Effort Earlier in the evening, Sunrisers Hyderabad, led by Orange Cap winner Kane Williamson (47) and a late cameo by Yusuf Pathan (45*), posted a competitive 178/6. While Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Rashid Khan bowled economically, the rest of the SRH bowling attack struggled to contain Watson’s brute force. The Fairytale Return This victory is particularly emotional for the Chennai franchise, which was returning to the fold after a two-year suspension. Dismissed by many at the start of the season as a "Dad’s Army" due to the high average age of the squad, MS Dhoni’s men proved that experience is invaluable in pressure situations.
"Every win is special, but this one is a bit more because of the comeback," a beaming MS Dhoni said during the post-match presentation. As the yellow flags fly high across Mumbai and Chennai, the Super Kings have officially reclaimed their throne as the kings of the IPL.
